Memory

Start by opening the bot's memory: the Memory button at the top of its chat, or Bot settings → Memory. Most memory problems are visible there.

A bot doesn't remember anything#

1. Check the memory mode. Open the workspace memory settings (Team map → Manage memory). It should be Capture and recall. Capture only stores but doesn't recall; Off and Paused stop recall.
2. Check the place. A memory belongs to one conversation, bot, channel, team, project or the workspace. A bot only recalls from places it belongs to. A fact told to one bot isn't recalled by another unless you Share memory with it.
3. Check the conversation isn't excluded. Excluded conversations aren't captured.
4. Check after a restore. Restored memory stays paused until you review it.

A bot recalls something wrong#

Open the memory, choose Inspect memory, and read its sources.

• If the fact is wrong, Save correction. The correction becomes the current version.
• If it's no longer true, Archive memory.
• If it should never be used again, Forget memory.

Also check the bot's own notebook, MEMORY.md, in its working folder. A bot can keep repeating something it wrote there, and memory corrections don't edit the notebook. Open the file and fix or delete the line.

It keeps using something I corrected#

• Check whether the old fact is pinned. Pinned memories stay at the front. Unpin it, then archive or correct it.
• Check the House Rules, the team brief and the bot's instructions. The bot reads those on every turn, so an old line there can outweigh a corrected memory. Bot settings → What shapes the bot shows everything it reads.
• Start a new conversation. The old fact may still be in the current conversation's history.

"Learning isn't configured"#

Capture and recall work without it. Automatic learning (distilling facts and ways of working) only starts once you choose a connection to do the distilling in the memory settings. Choose an eligible API connection, or leave learning off.

New learning never appears#

If Review new learning before activation is on, new learning waits in Needs review until you approve it. Check there.

Search seems weak or keyword-only

• Smart (semantic) search needs the local model download. Check Local model in the memory settings.
• If the model is missing or damaged, Murage reports recall as degraded and falls back to keyword search. Download it again.
• Intel Macs use keyword search only in this release.

The local model won't download

Check your internet connection and free disk space, then try again. Murage checks the file's size and hashes and refuses a file that doesn't match, so a failed check means the download was incomplete or altered, not that your data is at risk.

A memory import is refused

Import existing notes refuses a file that changed between the preview and the import, and files with links it doesn't allow. Preview again and import straight away.

Memory settings are missing on my phone

Memory administration is only available in the desktop app.

I forgot something but the bot still knows it

Forgetting removes it from Murage. If the text is also in a file, the bot's notebook, House Rules or the current conversation, the bot can still read it there. Text already sent to a hosted AI provider in an earlier turn can't be recalled from that provider.

Murage won't start after going back to an older version

Some updates upgrade the memory database in a way older versions can't read. Reinstall the newer version, or read the release notes of the version you upgraded to for the supported way back.
