Codex
Run bots on the official Codex CLI you install and sign in to yourself.
Codex is OpenAI's command-line coding agent. Murage runs the official Codex CLI you install and sign in to yourself, so a Codex bot thinks with your own Codex account.
Codex is a trademark of its owner. Murage isn't affiliated with OpenAI.
When to use it
- You already use Codex and want your bots on it.
- You want a full-featured engine: handing off work, connected apps, the built-in browser, computers, your phone and pictures.
- You want Codex's own commands, like
/reviewand/compact, inside a Murage chat.
Install and sign in
- Open Settings → Engines and find Codex.
- If it says Not detected, you have two ways to install it:
- Choose Install engine. Murage installs Codex for you into its own folder, checks that it runs, and only then switches to it. This works on macOS, Linux and 64-bit Windows, and needs Node.js and npm.
- Or choose Open install in Terminal. Murage opens Terminal with this command ready to paste:
npm install -g @openai/codex
- If the status says Detected · sign-in required, choose Open sign-in in Terminal and finish the sign-in there. The command is:
codex login --device-auth
- Back in Murage, choose Check again.
Updates
The Codex row has Check for engine updates. When a newer version exists, you'll see Engine update available and an Update button. Murage keeps your current Codex until the new version is installed and verified, so a failed update leaves you where you were. Stop running tasks before updating.
What works
- Tools: all of Murage's tools, including handing work to other bots, memory search, your own MCP servers, connected apps, the built-in browser, cloud and local computers, this computer (with your approval) and a USB-connected Android phone.
- Pictures you attach go straight to the model.
- Model picking: Codex's own models, the Flux Router tiers, models from an OpenAI key in Settings → Models, and local models that pass Murage's test for Codex-style tools.
- Effort: low, medium, high, xhigh and max in Bot settings → Model. Codex applies a level to the whole conversation, so pick it before you start.
- Engine commands: type
/to see Codex's own commands, such as/reviewand/compact, alongside Murage's. A command never interrupts a turn that's running.
Known limits
- Your Codex account's limits apply. Murage makes no claim about what your plan includes.
- A ChatGPT or Codex subscription doesn't pay for voice calls. Voice needs Flux Router credits or your own voice keys.
- Local models only appear for Codex after they pass the Codex (responses) check in Settings → Models → Local models.
Troubleshooting
"401 Unauthorized" Codex isn't signed in, or its sign-in expired. Check with codex login status in a terminal, sign in again with codex login --device-auth, then restart Murage.
"codex CLI not found" Install Codex, restart Murage, or choose Set CLI… and pick the codex program yourself.
"Engine installation could not be verified or activated. Your previous engine is unchanged." Finish running tasks, check Node.js, npm and your connection, then try Install engine again.
"Managed installation is not supported for this engine on this platform. Use its setup guide." Use the install command instead, or View setup guide.
"Could not check for engine updates." Murage couldn't reach the package registry. Try again later.
A model fails Pick a model your account actually has, refresh the list in Bot settings → Model after updating Codex, and try the same model in Codex on its own.
