Update errors
What each update message means, from a signature check that timed out to an update that could not be prepared, the Updating your memory screen, and the recovery window that opens when Murage can't start.
Where updates show
The sidebar has one update control. It reads An update is available, then Updating Murage while the new version downloads, then An update is ready when you can restart. If something went wrong it reads The update needs a look. Click it to open the update details, then choose Download, Restart to update or Try again.
The same card is in SettingsAbout & updates, with Check for updates. The Murage icon in the menu bar or system tray has Check for updates too.
The update was refused
You see
This update could not be verified, so Murage did not install itDo this
Murage could not confirm the update was ours, so it left your current version alone. Choose Download from murage.ai, which opens the download page. Quit Murage, install the current version over your copy, and open it again. Your conversations and settings stay where they are.
You see
The update failed verification. Download a fresh installer from the official Murage release page.Do this
The downloaded file did not match what we published. Get a fresh installer from the download page or the releases page and install it over your current copy.
You see
Signature check timed outDo this
On Windows, the signature check took too long to run. This is not a bad download, so there is nothing to re-download. Try the update again in a few minutes.
You see
Signature check unavailableDo this
Windows could not run its signature check at all, so Murage did not install the update. Try again in a few minutes. If it keeps happening, install the current version from the download page.
You see
Signature mismatch: this update is not signed by Ferrox LabsDo this
The file Murage received was not signed by us, so it was refused. Download a fresh installer from the download page. If this happens more than once on the same network, tell whoever runs that network.
You see
The update connection could not be verifiedDo this
The secure connection to the update server failed its check. That is about the connection, not the installer. Check that your computer's clock is right, then try without the VPN or proxy. Don't turn certificate checks off to get past it, whatever a forum post says; a clock that is a few minutes out is the usual cause, and it takes seconds to fix.
The update could not be prepared
Each of these names its own fix. Read the sentence on the card, fix the cause, then choose Try again or Check for updates.
You see
Not enough disk space to prepare the updateDo this
Make room on the drive Murage is installed on. Then try again.
You see
The update could not write to the app or its cacheDo this
Check that your user account can write to the folder Murage is installed in. If you are not sure, download the current version from the download page and install it over your copy.
You see
An update file is in useDo this
Another copy of Murage is holding a file the update needs. Quit every Murage window, including the one in the menu bar or system tray, then try again.
You see
The update files are missing or invalidDo this
The update server did not have what Murage expected. Check the releases page, or try again later.
You see
The update download was interrupted or the server is unavailableDo this
Check your internet connection and try again. Leave Murage open long enough for one full attempt.
Murage couldn't check for updates since
You see
Murage couldn't check for updates since [a date]Do this
This quiet line appears once update checks have been failing for a day or more, usually because of your connection, a proxy or a firewall. You can dismiss it. Choose Check for updates in SettingsAbout & updates or from the menu bar or tray icon. If checks keep failing, install the latest version by hand from the download page.
After the update: Updating your memory
You see
Updating your memoryDo this
After some updates Murage prepares your memory for the new version before it opens. The window shows how many messages and conversations it is working through and how long is left. Keep Murage open. On a long history it can take a while. Nothing is removed. Your conversations and memory stay as they are.
If you choose Quit Murage, the work pauses and carries on the next time you open Murage. If the screen says Murage paused, ran out of disk space or stopped at a time limit, see Memory health and learning.
Murage opens a recovery window
If Murage cannot start normally, or you asked for a backup from the recovery screen, it opens a window called Restore or recover Murage instead of the workspace.
You see
Another copy of Murage may still be openDo this
Another Murage window or process may still be holding your data. Quit every other Murage window, including from the menu bar or system tray, then choose Retry startup. In Backup mode the button reads Return to workspace. If it still will not start, choose Open diagnostics folder and send the newest log to support.
You see
Restore from a backupDo this
You need the backup file, which ends in .age, and your recovery key, murage-recovery-key.txt or the copy you saved. A restore goes into a new folder, so your current data stays as it is. The restored copy stays paused until you review it, and engines and messaging apps are connected again afterwards. The messages a restore can show are on Backup and restore errors.
You see
Recover without a backupDo this
Makes a recovery copy from the data on this computer. The copy is taken at one moment, so unfinished work may be missing. It opens paused for your review. Your current data is not changed.
You see
Murage opened in Backup modeDo this
In Backup mode your bots, schedules and messaging apps are paused while a backup is taken. Choose Return to workspace to carry on.
A download that keeps spinning, or a restart that does not update, is on Updates. How updates work in the first place is on Updating Murage.
