Limits
The fixed numbers in Murage: loop warnings, handoffs, voice notes, file sizes, routines, skills and more.
These are the limits built into Murage. Most exist to keep a bot from running away with your time or money, or to keep your data folder a sensible size. Where a limit can be changed, the page says how.
Loops and stalled turns
- Repeated calls: when a bot makes the same tool call with the same arguments 5, 10 and 20 times in one turn, a line appears in the chat saying the call was repeated and the bot may be stuck. Murage only warns. It doesn't cut the bot off, so press Stop if it's going in circles. The count starts again each turn. See Loop detection.
- Stalled turns: a turn that shows no activity at all for 20 minutes is stopped. It's watched from the moment it starts; while it's still being set up, the allowance is 60 minutes. A turn that keeps working, however long, is never touched, and a turn waiting on your approval, another bot or a free computer doesn't count as stalled. You can change the time with the
MURAGE_TURN_STALL_MSenvironment variable (minimum one minute). See Environment and flags.
Bots working together
- Chain depth: work can be handed down two steps, for example Chief to team lead to specialist. A bot can't hand work back to a bot already in the chain.
- Handoffs per turn: 16.
- Handoffs per task you start: 32 across the whole chain. The allowance lasts 24 hours.
- Handoffs running at once: 4 across Murage.
- Queued handoffs per conversation: 16.
- Busy teammates: a handoff to a busy bot is retried when it finishes, up to 3 times, then canceled.
- Quick questions: when one bot asks another a question, it waits about 15 seconds for a reply. A slower answer becomes a handoff and arrives after the asking bot finishes its turn.
- Contact approvals: a card asking whether one bot may contact another is denied if nobody answers within 15 minutes.
- Group chats: a bot's reply can bring in teammates it @mentions for one more round, never deeper.
See Bot handoffs and Teams and team leads.
Bots and the Chief of Staff
- Chief's roster: the Chief of Staff's view of your team lists up to 40 bots and teams.
- Bots created by a bot: at most 4 in one turn, and none once the workspace has 100 bots.
- Conversations at once: one bot works on up to 3 conversations at the same time.
- Shared resources: a turn waits up to one hour for another conversation to free the browser, computer or working folder it needs.
Voice notes
- Length: up to 1,500 characters of text, about a minute and a half of speech. A longer note is refused, and the bot is told to summarize and point you to the chat.
- Per turn: up to 3 voice notes.
See Voice notes and Voice.
Files and uploads
- Images you attach: up to 10 MB each.
- Other files you attach: up to 25 MB each.
- Total attachment storage: 512 MB. Murage never deletes old attachments to make room. Once the limit is reached, new uploads are refused until you remove some.
- Webhook requests: the body can be up to 256 KB. See Webhooks.
- Chat history: the desktop loads 100 messages at a time and loads older ones as you scroll up.
Routines and watches
- Interval: a routine that repeats every so many minutes must use a whole number from 5 to 1,440 (24 hours).
- Run limit: if you set one, it's a whole number from 5 to 240 minutes.
- Late runs: if your computer was off or asleep at the scheduled time, the routine still runs when Murage is back, as long as it's less than 12 hours late. After that, the run is marked missed.
- Overlapping runs: a routine doesn't pile up copies of itself. While one run is still going, later scheduled runs are skipped and counted.
- Instructions: up to 100,000 characters per routine. The editor tells you before you go over.
- Attachments: up to 50 per routine.
- Watches: a watch checks a file in the bot's working folder, up to 1 MB. It can't watch memory, skills, settings or files that look like secrets.
See Routines and Routines and webhooks.
Approvals
- Allow for this task: lasts until the conversation is reset, Murage restarts or 12 hours pass.
- Remembered recipients: each bot remembers up to 2,000 people it has messaged, so messaging them again isn't "someone new". The oldest drop off first.
- Commands on a card: an approval card shows up to 4,000 characters of a command, marked where it's cut.
- Image generation: one image attempt per turn, and you approve each one. An image approval nobody answers closes after 15 minutes.
See Permissions matrix.
Connected apps and MCP
- Labeled accounts: up to 5 accounts per app, for example two Gmail accounts.
- Custom MCP servers: up to 20.
- Images from one MCP tool result: up to 4.
See Connected apps, MCP and MCP servers.
Skills, playbooks and House Rules
- Importing a skill: up to 30 files, 256 KB per file and 2 MB in total. A zip can be up to 8 MB with up to 64 entries.
- Skill names and descriptions: names up to 64 characters, descriptions up to 1,024.
- Playbooks: up to 3 installed playbooks are used in one turn, only those whose triggers match the job, with up to 24,000 characters between them.
- House rules: up to 20 KB.
- About me: up to 4,000 characters.
See Skills and House rules.
Paired devices
- Paired devices: up to 20 phones per computer.
